A Journey in Watercolor
As a native Vermonter, I have always been inspired by the natural beauty of Vermont, Lake Champlain & our beautiful islands. The very nature of watercolor seems to lend itself to our ever changing surroundings, nature’s nuances and changing seasons. I feel very fortunate to have spent most of my seven decades in this beautiful state.
Art has always been an important part of my life.
Although I am mostly self-taught, I have found several wonderful teachers and inspiring classes in this area. The late Ruth Colburn Bottomley was my teacher, friend, and mentor for over 40 years. I took weekly classes for 15 years with the late Stan Marc Wright. He encouraged me to try watercolor, and I’ve been hooked every since. Over the years I took many weekly workshops in Vermont & Maine with Zolton Szabo, He was a nationally known Artist, Author and Teacher. He taught me many technical skills, but most importantly, how to really see nature and to paint what I know and love. In recent years, I travel to Stowe and to classes taught by Lisa Forrester Beach, a wonderful patient teacher that has helped me with design & composition, a constant source of frustration for me. Her classes are a joy to be in. I am grateful for all the guidance and encouragement I have received through the years.
I was a member of Northern Vermont Artist’s Association for 30 years. The Essex Art League for 20 years. I have also belonged to Clinton County Arts in New York state & Southern Vt. Artist Assoc. and have exhibited with all of them, as well as the Champlain Valley Fair. I have placed in several juried shows as well as won several awards over the years.
It has been my great pleasure to be involved with the Grand Isle Art Show for its 30 year run. I have always been very proud of the amazing artistic talents in these Islands and the show we put on every year. Thankfully, the show continues with CIAO [Champlain Islands Art Organization], a great group that is keeping the Art Community in Grand Isle County, alive & well.
I also teach a few students, several of them are my own Grandchildren. I will have an open studio with “ Heart of the Islands” again this year. I was very pleased to be CIAO’s Featured Artist on July 25th, 26th, & 27th, 2008.
Watercolor has been a great joy in my life, and I can only hope it will be a long journey that many of you can enjoy with me.
